What do you do when the story you want to write doesn't want to be written?
Yesterday I was struggling with the story I was writing for you. I had the prompt, I had the plot, I had the characters, I had the setting. I just couldn't make those pieces fit into one picture.
I REALLY liked the idea too. I thought it would be a great story if I could execute it properly. Needless to say the story isn't written yet.
What do you do when you have everything but can't make it work? There's a huge list of things you can do, many of them boil down to procrastinating or quitting. Not something I recommend.
I wrote down all the notes I had on the story, made sure everything I knew was there and then I put it away. I had to get words down and my first choice wasn't going to work.
It's easy to just quit when things get hard. Many people do. Quitting is the easiest thing out there. What's hard is understanding you can only do so much but you CAN do something.
I picked up another prompt and started writing. I was worried the words weren't going to come at all. The story flowed easily. I had a little unspent agitation at the first story and I used it for one of the characters.
I committed to writing EVERY DAY. This includes days when I don't feel like it or when the words are stuck somewhere on the New Jersey turnpike (I live in NC, so you can imagine that's quite a drive).
This has NOT been easy. Some days I write entire pages I KNOW I'm going to throw away later. Some days I just put out entire pages of notes but no actual story. This still counts, by the way. Writing is writing.
If there's something you want to do in your life, get committed. Get committed when it's hard. I sincerely hope everything you want to do you excel at immediately, but life doesn't seem to happen that way.
If you want to get better, you have to work. Note that 'work' is not the four letter word most people think it is. Work isn't always fun, but it's necessary. It will get easier, but that only comes after you put in the time and effort
Let's all commit to something we've been dreaming about. Commit EVERY DAY to moving yourself closer to your goals. Baby steps are still steps in the right direction so take them. Just don't give up. I believe in you.
